50 Memorable Fall Activities For Families That Everyone Will Love

Summer finally shifted to fall. The weather got colder, and we can put on big sweaters without boiling in them by lunchtime. As we place our autumn-themed coffee orders, we wonder about fall activities we can do. Autumn is such a magical season – golden leaves, cosy clothes, pumpkin spice everything – and yet we need to get creative and plan fall activities for us, our kids or our pets.

This guide will help you figure out budget-friendly ideas, from family adventures to solo self-care days, to get the most out of this magical season.

1. Visit a Local Apple Orchard and Pick Your Own Apples

Nothing says fall family fun like a day at the apple orchard! Kids love wandering around, passing rows of apple trees and looking for the prettiest, freshest apples. It’s a simple way to enjoy sunny days outside and get your kids tired, breathing in crisp autumn air. Plus, the home baking of your little harvest afterwards is a perfect reward for all the hard work.

2. Go Pumpkin Picking and Host a Family Carving Contest

Pumpkin picking is one of the most fun fall activities for all ages. If you are based in the US, finding a nearby pumpkin patch should not be an issue. Kids find great joy in going through all the pumpkins, picking the perfect size and shape, and imagining what they will carve into it. Add some hot cocoa and maybe a prize for the best pumpkin, and you will create a truly memorable afternoon.

3. Plan a Cosy Picnic Surrounded by Fall Foliage

Turn a simple afternoon into a magical family moment by planning a picnic among the colourful autumn leaves. Pack your car with soup or tea in thermoses, cosy blankets and yummy autumn-themed snacks, and head to your nearest family park. Sitting under the trees and enjoying food, while kids run around and play, is so relaxing and detoxifying from everyday stress and screens. Additionally, it’s the most budget-friendly activity you can think of.

4. Have a “Fall Movie Night” with Snacks and Blankets

Transform your living room into the ultimate fall haven with a themed movie night. Grab some popcorn, caramel apples, a mix of candies and family-friendly autumn movies. The best part about this activity is that you can go for it every weekend!

5. Explore a Corn Maze or Attend a Local Harvest Festival

Attend the local harvest festival and get into the festive spirit by exploring the corn maze, playing games such as apple catching, or hopping on some rides. These events are packed with exciting and fun activities, and kids love the adventure mixed with memorable play. And for us parents, it also has the nostalgic charm of small-town autumn celebrations.

6. Make Leaf Art or Create DIY Fall Garlands

Encourage creativity with simple and fun fall activities for kids! Visit your local park or backyard and gather some colourful leaves, acorns, chestnuts, or anything you can find and salvage. Children love to paint, glue, collect or sort them. For inspiration on kid-friendly autumn crafts, have a look at my “45+ Easy Fall Crafts for Kids That Toddlers Can Do Too” post.

7. Bake Pumpkin Cookies or Caramel Apples Together

Yum! Such a productive and rewarding activity. Turn your kitchen into a cosy autumn bakery by baking pumpkin cookies or dipping caramel apples together. Your kids will love mixing ingredients and tasting batter. Let them decorate their creations for extra creativity points. It’s great for developing fine motor skills and creating sweet memories (literally!). Plus, the house will smell amazing!

8. Go on a “Nature Treasure Hunt” and Collect Acorns, Leaves, and Pinecones

Use the autumn walk outdoors for a mini scavenger hunt. Look for “treasures” and gather them in a small basket or paper bag. You can use everything you collected for autumn crafts later on. This fun outdoor game helps little ones explore nature, stay active, and learn about the changing seasons.

9. Visit a Petting Zoo or Pumpkin Patch

The absolute favourite for kids of all ages! Nothing brings more smiles than picking pumpkins while getting to pet cute animals. Find an event in your local petting zoo and head there for a fun day filled with farm animals, riding a hay waggon, choosing pumpkins and delicious snacks. A lot of these events help the zoo and its inhabitants financially, so it’s for a good cause. Don’t forget to snap a lot of photos!

10. Host a Backyard Campfire Night

Cosy evenings around a crackling fire, surrounded by your favourite people, good food and music. What more to wish for during chilly and dark evenings? Invite your family or friends over for a campfire night complete with s’mores, ghost stories, and warm drinks. Layer up with blankets, bring out lanterns or fairy lights, and enjoy the calm of a crisp fall evening. Kids will love roasting marshmallows, and adults can unwind with hot cider or mulled wine.

11. Visit a Local Flower Farm Before Frost

Before the first frost settles in, take a trip to a nearby flower farm to enjoy the last blooms of the season. Many farmers still offer their goods in early fall, and you can even get better deals on colourful dahlias, sunflowers, or zinnias. Dry them later on by hanging them upside down in a cool, dry place and reuse them for autumn home decor.

12. Go on a Foliage Photography Challenge

Autumn’s colours are a photographer’s dream! Choose a one-colour theme and try to match anything to those shades. Once you’ve gathered everything for your photoshoot, capture the beauty of the season to the fullest potential. Then print it all out and create a DIY wall or scrapbook. Some people choose this activity to create that extra bit of autumnal decor for their home.

13. Have a “No Technology” Fall Hike

Taking a break from all screens and technology in the house can be so liberating. And most importantly, it’s a great detox for your mind. Leave all the devices at home, and if you must take some, put them on silent or aeroplane mode. Then get ready for a full day of walking or hiking in nature. Pick a spot that’s not too popular (we all know how annoying it is when people spawn exactly where we’re headed), and enjoy the crisp fall breeze. If you can handle it, make it a weekly habit.

14. Build a DIY Bird Feeder Station

We love to see this fall activity getting more popular every year. People are building bird feeders or tiny homes and helping them prepare for cold days. Create simple bird feeders using pinecones, peanut butter, birdseed, or even orange halves. Watching birds appreciate your work is honestly so heartwarming.

15. Host a Cozy Outdoor Brunch

Seasonal pastries like cinnamon rolls or pumpkin pie, warm cider or hot chocolate, and that autumn-themed breakfast menu? Sign us up! An autumn brunch is the perfect weekend activity for friends and family – relaxing, delicious fun, filled with laughter. And there are so many cute and practical ideas for the setup on Pinterest trending right now!

16. Go Canoeing or Paddleboarding on a Misty Morning

This one is for early birds and adventurous people, as it requires waking up at the crack of dawn, putting on warm clothes and heading to the nearest lake or river. Few experiences are as serene as paddling across calm, misty waters surrounded by the vibrant colours of fall. Watching the reflections of red and gold breaking on the water while slowly canoeing, kayaking, or paddleboarding, it’s a peaceful way to enjoy nature’s quiet side. And you will appreciate hot morning coffee afterwards more than ever!

17. Make a DIY Autumn Wreath

We know, it’s so much easier to just pop to Target and get one. But hear us out – a touch of homemade beauty to your front door in the form of a handmade wreath will bring you so much joy. Every day, you will get to see your creation on full display. Gather cinnamon sticks, pinecones, twigs, dried orange slices, or eucalyptus leaves to create a fragrant and rustic design. You can also add some personal touch – a ribbon bow, wooden monogram, letter, small charm or anything that represents your style.

18. Try Candle-Making with Fall Scents

Amazon or your local stores sell ready kits for candle making, but you really need some jars, wicks, and wax. The rest of the materials, such as fragrance oils, wax dye or decorative elements, can also be purchased in a Dollar Store or from local hobby enthusiasts. Choose comforting scents like vanilla, cinnamon, apple pie, or clove — they instantly create that warm fall atmosphere. Plus, your creations might be an adorable seasonal gift (psst, that’s how we started our candle store, too!).

19. Host a “Chili Cook-Off” Night

Invite family or friends over and ask them to prepare and bring their homemade chilli. Then you can all have some tasting sessions together – from spicy beef to vegetarian bean versions. It’s a great way to discover new ways of cooking chilli and sharing recipes. Serve warm, buttery cornbread muffins or baked potatoes as sides when it gets too spicy.

20. Bake a “Mystery Pie”

While we are on the topic of bringing people over and sharing food, you can include the mystery pie as well. Each person secretly chooses one ingredient to add to the pie filling — from chopped nuts and chocolate chips to cinnamon or caramel drizzle. Once baked, everyone gets to guess who added what. The results are often delicious, surprising, and full of laughter. But please, make sure everyone is aware of allergies ahead!

21. Have a Fall Puzzle & Movie Marathon Day

Once your kids are old enough, you can pull out a large puzzle and build it in peace throughout the rainy day (definitely not possible around babies or toddlers). You can also build it together whilst having your favourite autumn comfort movie on in the background.

22. Create an Indoor Leaf Lantern

Prepare a glass jar or container, gather colourful leaves and press them flat with heavy books. Later, glue them onto your jar and let it dry. When it gets dark outside, place a tea light or LED light inside and enjoy your soft, cosy and aesthetic leaf lantern with a warm glow and beautiful details. It’s a perfect and easy craft for both kids and adults.

23. Start a Fall-Themed Journal

Capture the essence of the season by starting your very own fall-themed journal. What are you going to write about? Anything that you are grateful for, what excites you this season, favourite recipes or even little things such as fall events. Include photos, leaves, and little notes about moments you experienced this fall that made you smile. It’s so easy to forget those little things, and next year this journal will remind you how much changed.

24. Have a “Sweater Swap” With Friends

It sounds controversial, but some people really do share their clothes with close friends. It’s a great and sustainable way to refresh your seasonal wardrobe without spending a penny. Invite a few friends over and ask everyone to bring sweaters they no longer wear (or even those they still do). You will be surprised at how many “new” cosy pieces you can find in each other’s closets.

25. Host a Game Night with a Fall Twist

Mystery-themed games are the best during the fall. Start with setting up the mood with candlelight, autumn-themed drinks and soft music. Gather your favourite people and play board games or more advanced role-play mystery games. For example, those times when you have to figure out who the killer is. These are popular, especially around Halloween time.

26. Do a Home Fall Detox Day

Some days, you have to say no to all plans and social life and focus on refreshing your mind and your living space. Start by decluttering your space, swapping summer décor for cosy fall touches like candles, blankets, and warm lighting. Light a few scented candles, open the windows for fresh air, and create a calm, tidy environment that helps you feel grounded and peaceful. And don’t forget to end the tiring cleaning day with some self-care.

27. Create a Backyard Pumpkin Bowling Game

Turn your backyard into a playful autumn bowling alley! All you need are small pumpkins as bowling balls and some empty cans or plastic bottles. And don’t even worry about the uneven shapes of pumpkins – that makes the whole game extra unpredictable and fun.

28. DIY Scarecrow Building Contest

Gather your family and friends and their children, and let the scarecrow-building challenge begin! Everyone should get a pile of old clothes, some accessories, hay or straw, buttons and hats or scarves. If you want to make it extra competitive, set a timer. The winner is chosen by your own rules – the spookiest, the silliest or the scariest scarecrow. Once the contest is over, display the scarecrows outside your home or garden, or give them away to your neighbours.

29. Go on a Family “Colour Hunt” Walk

Similar to the scavenging hunt for specific objects, you can have a lot of fun hunting for colour themes. The easiest way to do this is to come up with a sheet that already has assigned colours and then let your kids look for items that match. It’s a simple yet engaging way for kids to connect with nature and learn about seasonal colours.

30. Make Fall Playdough with Spices

There are countless recipes on Pinterest for fall-themed playdough. Most of the time, you need ingredients that you already have in your cupboard, such as spices, flour or cornflour. Kids will love kneading and shaping the dough into pumpkins, leaves, or acorns while enjoying the soothing fall scents. Some parents go as far as making it edible, which sorts out the playing and snacking at once.

31. Create a DIY Autumn Puppet Show

Encourage imagination and storytelling with a family puppet show! Use store-bought puppets or create them from paper bags, socks or cardboard. Cute little foxes, squirrels, hedgehogs, and owls will win little hearts instantly. Build a tiny “forest” stage from a cardboard box and decorate it with leaves, twigs, and craft paper. Let your kids come up with the scripts and follow along.

32. Bake a Bread Together

Spare one day for cosy bread baking from scratch. A great opportunity to teach your kids how to mix, knead and shape the dough. It’s educational, comforting, and so rewarding! Nothing like freshly baked homemade bread with butter and a cup of hot cocoa!

33. Have a “Fall Science Day”

During those cold and rainy days, you will have to get extra creative with kids’ activities. It might require some sacrifices, such as turning your kitchen into a mini science lab for the day. Try simple, fun experiments like growing crystals, making a leaf colour-changing display, or learning how pumpkins float. Let your kids get dirty. It’s just for a day.

34. Make an Autumn Sensory Bin

Whilst your kitchen is already messy from the mini science project, use that space to create fall-themed sensory bins as well. People think those are just for babies and toddlers, but even older kids will enjoy them. Create a hands-on sensory experience by filling a large container with rice, colourful leaves, pinecones, small pumpkins, and seasonal trinkets. Then let them scoop out treasures. Check out my other post, “The Best Fall Sensory Bins for Toddlers”, for inspiration.

35. Carve Mini Pumpkins into Candle Holders

Transform your front yard into a soft autumn glow. Scoop out the centre of small pumpkins and pop in a tealight or small candle. It’s a simple yet stunning way to decorate your table, windowsill, or porch for fall gatherings. Use scented tealights in pumpkin spice, cinnamon, or vanilla for a cosy, fragrant touch that fills your home with warmth.

36. Start a “Seasonal Story Jar”

Collecting little moments in the form of stories from each family member will make the season even more memorable. It adds a perspective from each member, showing gratitude, unique experiences and beautiful moments. Choose a jar, and let everyone write their little story on a piece of paper and drop it in. By the end of the season, you can all read through them together.

37. Make an Autumn Herb Bundle

Create your own natural air freshener with an autumn-inspired herb bundle. Tie together rosemary sprigs, cinnamon sticks, and dried orange slices with a bit of twine or ribbon. Hang the bundle near your kitchen, entryway, or windowsill — it releases a subtle seasonal scent every time the air moves.

38. Organize a Mini Fall Market with Friends

Bring your community together with a small backyard fall market! Choose friends who love crafting and set up a few tables to sell or trade your handmade goods. It’s such a great way to support their small businesses and spend more valuable time with each other. Decorate the space with pumpkins, offer cider or hot chocolate and bring everyone into the festive spirit.

39. Make an Autumn Vision Board

What are the things you wish to try this season? Can’t decide? Take magazines, photos or print images from Pinterest and create your autumn-themed vision board. Include everything that inspires and excites you. It should be clear as day when you look at it and reflect on your goals and desires.

40. Create a “Thankful Tree” Centerpiece

Celebrate gratitude in a beautiful, creative way by making a “thankful tree”. Find sturdy wigs, clean them and place them on a base. Then decorate them with your preferred decor style and leaves. On each leaf, write down what you are grateful for. It’s a heartfelt way to reflect on life’s blessings.

41. DIY Fall Carnival at Home

Bring the excitement of a carnival right to your home or backyard! Set up games such as toss with pumpkins, apple bobbing or the pumpkin bowling I mentioned before. Make sure you have plenty of food and candies. Decorate the space with fairy lights and fall decor, and play some fun music. Kids will love playing, laughing, and winning small prizes.

42. Backyard Camping Under the Fall Sky

After the fall carnival, use your backyard for under-the-fall-sky camping. Your yard is already cosy with all the lights and fall decor, so go ahead and add pitched tents, warm blankets and a lit campfire. There is no better ending to such a day than a handful of s’mores and stories. No fire pit? No problem! Roast mini marshmallows over a candle or portable stove for that classic camping feel — no flames required.

43. Create a Fall Kindness Calendar

Similar to the “seasonal story jar”, celebrate the season of giving by making a “fall kindness calendar”. Write down one kind act for each day in October or November — things like baking cookies for a neighbour, donating old clothes, or writing thank-you notes. It’s a beautiful way to teach kids compassion while filling your month with joy.

44. Volunteer for a Fall Community Event

Get into the spirit of giving by helping out at a local charity, school fair, or community cleanup. There is so much that needs to be done during the fall season, from harvest festivals to donation drives. Support your family, friends or local community, and encourage your kids to choose one good deed each. Donating old clothes or toys, or baking treats for neighbours – it’s about the little things.

45. Create a DIY Hot Chocolate Bar

Most of us already have a coffee bar all year round. So why not add a hot chocolate bar for those chilly and cosy nights? Set out mugs, marshmallows, whipped cream, caramel drizzle, cinnamon, and candy canes. Let everyone build their perfect cup of cocoa! Extra points for mini cookies, chocolate shavings and toppings are guaranteed.

46. Create Scented Pinecone Fire Starters

Gather pinecones from your yard or local park, clean them up and then dip them in melted wax. Ideally, mix the wax with fall scents first. Once the pinecones dry, you can use them as fire starters for the fireplace or when hosting a campfire. If you wrap them in paper or twine, you will create a perfect DIY gift for your friends. It’s an eco-friendly, practical and good-smelling item for seasonal use.

47. “Adopt a Tree” Family Project

At your local park or neighbourhood, “adopt” one tree that you will regularly take care of throughout the fall. Use it to set up supplies and food for local wildlife, maintain the area around it, and if you wish, take pictures of the before and after effect. Many people take care of an entire alley of trees, which helps to maintain them regularly and boost the community spirit.

48. Host a “Swap & Sip” Night

Invite friends or neighbours over and host a swap and sip night, where everyone brings gently used autumn items to swap. It can be books, decor, scarves or simply drinks. You probably saw videos like that going around already, where each friend brings a whole tray of food or drink with a chosen theme. Whether you go for alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages, the choices are endless, and the fun is guaranteed.

49. Host a “Harvest-Inspired Dinner Night”

While you plan any of the mentioned parties and get-togethers, you can include a homemade dinner inspired by the autumn harvest. Think roasted root vegetables, butternut squash soup, and apple crumble. Involve the whole family in cooking and setting a rustic-style table with dried leaves, candles, and pumpkins. The best time to do this is, of course, Thanksgiving dinner, when everyone can chime in with their own creations.

50. Make a “Cozy Corner” Nook for Fall

We all deserve a little corner just for ourselves. And what’s better than reading a book on Sunday morning with a hot cup of coffee in your own tiny world? Transform a small spot in your home into a seasonal reading or relaxation nook. Add soft blankets, fairy lights, autumn-scented candles, and a basket filled with books, journals, or knitting supplies. For the entire season, this will be your sanctuary. And you can always keep it going on until Christmas; just swap the decor.

Final Thoughts

This guide offers just a small portion of fall activities that you can try with your family or by yourself. From the most traditional ones to unexpected choices – this season, promise yourself that you’ll get creative and step outside your comfort zone. Because once the snow falls and everyone retreats indoors, reconnecting with loved ones becomes just a little harder (and let’s be honest — no one likes leaving their warm blanket!).

Use the fall season to slow down a bit, soak in the colours and create memorable moments that truly warm your heart. Get back to crafting, cooing, baking, or just walking through the pile of crunchy leaves, enjoying the crisp air. Grab your favourite big sweater and autumn drinks, and head out there for adventures filled with laughter and connections.
